NBJ's Condition-Specific Category Analysis

The following is a breakdown of Nutrition Business Journal's 2007 U.S. supplement sales data and our supplement, OTC and Rx market analysis for the top 16 condition-specific categories. This analysis was informed by Rx drug sales data from IMS Health, OTC drug data from Information Resources Inc. and Nicholas Hall and Co., and supplement sales data from SPINS, as well as by seven years of condition-specific supplement sales segmentation by NBJ.

2007 category sales breakdown: U.S. Consumer sales of all sports nutrition/energy/weight-loss products across the Rx, OTC and supplement sectors grew 6% to $7.6 billion in 2007. Once again, dietary supplements accounted for the bulk (87%) of sales in this category, with sales totaling $6.7 billion last year. Meal replacement and sports nutrition supplements accounted for the most dollars added to the category, with each contributing more than $2 billion in 2007. Homeopathic remedies and super fruits also provided mega fuel for the category, with each climbing into double-digit growth territory in 2007.
