2009 Scientific Achievement Award: USANA

Jan 1, 2010 12:00 PM

USANA's commitment to research and product quality has raised the bar for the global supplement industry

On a typical day, USANA Health Sciences employs a huge team of people in its research & development and quality control departments to comb through and analyze new information on nutritional science and develop relationships with leading research groups around the world. Their goal: to ensure that USANA's supplements incorporate the very latest advances in nutritional science. As a result of this work, the company reformulates its products, on average, every two years. This is just one of the ways in which USANA, a global multi-level marketing (MLM) and nutrition company, advances the scientific quality of its products like few others in the industry have been able to do. USANA's longtime commitment to research and product quality earned the company a 2009 Scientific Achievement Award from Nutrition Business Journal.

The Salt Lake City-based company's commitment to developing supplements based on cutting-edge nutritional science is part of the very fabric of it's business model, said Tim Wood, PhD, USANA's executive vice president of research and development. This model goes back to the original vision for the company developed by its founder, Myron Wentz, PhD. Before starting USANA, Wentz founded Salt Lake City-based Gull Laboratories, a manufacturer and marketer of medical diagnostic kits to detect infections and certain autoimmune disorders. Insights on cellular nutrition gleaned from his work at Gull prompted Wentz to create USANA in 1992. Wentz envisioned a company that developed quality, science-based supplements with truly meaningful health benefits and that embraced a pharmaceutical standard for manufacturing quality and proving product efficacy, Wood said.
