Alticor's investment in Metagenics, Atrium's purchase of Garden of Life and Vitamin Shoppe IPO top 2009 deals
The economic storm that shut down merger & acquisition and other investment deals within the U.S. market in the fourth quarter of 2008 kept activity relatively frozen until the second half of 2009, when capital markets finally began to thaw and deals were once again being consummated within the U.S. nutrition industry. These are the Top 10 Nutrition Industry Deals that occurred in 2009, as seen by Nutrition Business Journal.
Alticor, the $8.2 billion global network-marketing company behind the Nutrilite supplement brand, announced in August 2009 that it was purchasing a substantial ownership stake in Metagenics, a leading manufacturer and distributor of medical foods and nutraceutical products through the health practitioner channel. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Since that announcement, the two companies have been talking up the partnership and explaining how Alticor's investment will help Metagenics move closer to its goal of reversing the current epidemic of chronic illness in the United States.
