2009 Education Award: CRN

Jan 1, 2010 12:00 PM

From engaging with reporters and researchers to lobbying Congress, CRN is working to improve the climate for dietary supplements

Summarizing all of the education work that the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) does on behalf of the dietary supplement industry is a difficult task. That's because pretty much everything the trade association does incorporates some element of education that is directed at consumers, media, health practitioners, researchers, lawmakers, or the industry itself. “Education is very central to what we do,” said CRN President and CEO Steve Mister. “Education is what changes minds and convinces people of the benefits and safety of dietary supplements and of the credibility of the industry.” Such work is becoming more crucial than ever, which is why Nutrition Business Journal is recognizing CRN with an Efforts on Behalf of the Industry Award.

Media outreach was a key focus last year for CRN, which engaged with reporters and responded to inaccurate stories about the industry or the safety of supplements. “There were a number of articles published last year that incorrectly stated that the supplement industry is not regulated,” said Judy Blatman, CRN senior vice president of communication. In May 2009, Sports Illustrated published a particularly damning — and one-sided — article about the sports supplement market. Along with issuing a detailed response to the piece, Blatman and other CRN executives met with the article authors to educate them face to face about the dietary supplement industry and the laws that regulate it.
