The research backing the industry's products is stronger thanks to Anthony Almada and his mantra: ‘Science before sales’
Growing up in Seal Beach, California, in the 1970s, Anthony Almada seemed an unlikely candidate for a career in sports nutrition. He was a “small kid,” raised on Wonder Bread and red meat. His parents dreamed of their son becoming a doctor. And no one he knew paid much attention to the idea that the food and nutrients you consumed could influence the way you looked, felt, or moved. Then, a dietary supplement salesman paid a poolside visit to Almada's high school swim team. He suggested that mysterious tablets made of something called “desiccated liver” could make the swimmers faster. Almada was intrigued but not sold, so he started asking questions. The sports nutrition industry veteran, a recipient of Nutrition Business Journal's 2009 Efforts on Behalf of the Industry Award, has been asking them ever since.
“I kept that bottle as if it were a treasure,” Almada told NBJ. He also took it to a local health food store to try to glean more information and ended up taking a job there at age 15. Over the next five years, Almada would work at seven different nutrition stores, scrutinizing each supplement product with equal voracity. “I would ask question after question: ‘Well, how do you know this really works?’” he recalled. “No one ever had the answers.”
