Sweet Developments in Healthy Foods and Beverages for Children
Apr 1, 2009 12:00 PM
U.S. kids, like all Americans, consume a staggering amount of sugar each year, with much of the sweet stuff coming from carbonated soft drinks, fruit drinks and other beverages. According to the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, between 56% and 85% of school kids consume at least one can of soda every day, while 20% of male teenagers gulp down four or more sodas daily. Simply replacing one can of soda with water will improve a child's glucose and insulin levels, the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine reported in its April 2009 issue. Another study published in the issue found that increased amounts of sugary drinks were associated with increased blood pressure, blood glucose levels, waist circumference, and body mass index (BMI) and decreased HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol) levels.
Stevia is one natural sweetener poised to help reduce the amount of sugar consumed by kids in the form of drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. Already, the Coca Cola Co. has launched a version of its Sprite drink sweetened with Cargill's brand of stevia-based sweetener, Truvia. PepsiCo has rolled out three Sobe Life Waters and a new Tropicana orange juice beverage called Trop50 that are all sweetened with Merisant's PureVia brand stevia product.
