Ingredients That Differentiate Joint Care Products Should Thrive as Glucosamine Flattens

Despite survey data showing that safety concerns prompted many arthritis sufferers to switch from drugs to supplements last fall, some manufacturers of joint-care supplements said the COX-2 inhibitor recalls and warnings were insignificant to the category. “We’re seeing an increase in sales, but I don’t believe it has anything to do with the prescription drug issue,” said Harvey Kamil, president & chief financial officer of NBTY, which markets Osteo Bi-Flex and other joint care products. “It just has to do with the fact that these products work. People get relief.”
Other executives said the impacts are ambiguous. “It’s very difficult to pinpoint the positive or negative impact of that kind of news,” said Terry Keller, vice president of sales for Weider Nutrition International, which markets Lubriflex, Move Free and other joint care products under its Schiff label. “The joint care category, both brand and private label, is so heavily promoted that it’s hard to isolate any particular uptick that could be attributed to those negative COX-2 incident reports.”
