Bogus Raw Material Tarnishes Hoodia’s Equity, But Committed Report Strong Sales

Fake hoodia, slow science and inconstant marketers make life hard for remaining players
Sales of weight-loss supplements purporting to contain Hoodia gordonii totaled over $35 million in the U.S. in food, drug and mass market stores alone for the 52 week period ending May 20, 2007, IRI data shows. That figure does not include Wal-Mart, club stores or natural foods outlets.
“I’d say that’s 32 percent of the marketplace,” estimated Kelly Lockwood, chief executive offi cer of JEC Nutrition, maker of H57 Hoodia, which claims to be America’s only “pure Hoodia gordonii weight-loss supplement.” He estimates the total U.S. hoodia market exceeds $100 million annually in sales.
