Heart Supplements Focus on Cholesterol and Inflammation

From fish oil to multivitamins, from phytosterols to herbs to aspirin, a wide range of products compete for the attention of consumers seeking dietary supplements to help support cardiovascular health. And no wonder. Heart disease reigns as the number one killer of Americans, claiming nearly 700,000 lives in 2002, according to the Centers for Disease Control. And as aging baby boomers become more vulnerable to heart problems, the quest for preventative measures becomes a higher priority.
Continuing research on the causes of heart disease creates a steady buzz of interest in nutritional therapies. As widely reported in the media, researchers have learned that inflammation of the arteries is probably a major factor in heart disease for many people. “At the heart of heart disease, researchers now believe, are runaway immune responses,” noted Daniel DeNoon on WebMD. “This ‘inflammation’ theory holds that immune cells attack cholesterol-riddled plaque in blood-vessel walls. The weakened, plaque-filled walls burst, spilling deadly blood clots into the circulation.”
