Nothing to Sneeze At: Sales Of Allergen-Free, Gluten-Free Foods Soar

The market for allergen-free and glutenfree foods has increased dramatically in the past year and appears poised for explosive growth, as supermarkets and other mainstream shopping outlets install sections devoted to these products. Over 2,500 products labeled as gluten-free are now on the market in the U.S., with sales totaling over $662 million, according to SPINS. Growth of gluten- free products increased 13% over the past year.
According to Datamonitor, 607 new gluten- free foods and beverages were introduced in North America during the first five months of 2005, up from 544 products for all of 2004 and just 187 back in 2001. For the year ending June 11, 2005, SPINS reported 18% growth in nine key gluten-free categories in conventional markets. Sales of soup nearly doubled (47%), followed by cookies and snack bars (31%), entrees and mixes (30%), candy and individual snacks (28%), bread and baked goods, including frozen and non-frozen (26%), baking mixes, supplies and flours (24%), frozen entrees, pizzas and convenience foods (24%), chips, pretzels and snacks (9%) and puddings and shelf-stable desserts (7%). In natural food stores, 11.9% growth across nine key categories was led by candy and individual snacks (47%), followed by frozen entrée, pizzas and convenience foods (28%), bread and baked goods (23%), baking mixes, supplies and flours (19%), soup (12%), cookies and snack bars (11%), entrees and mixes (9%), puddings and shelf-stable desserts (8%), and chips, pretzels and snacks (7%.)
