Competition For Shelf Space Increases Among Makers of Children’s Nutrition & Cereal Bars
Feb 1, 2004 12:00 PM
Nearly one-third (30%) of children under 12 eat a snack bar or meal replacement bar at least once a week, according to a 2002 Gallup survey of moms. An article in the Journal of the American Dietetic Assn. in November 2002 reported that children consume 17% of all adult bars. But bars formulated for adults often fail to meet children’s nutritional needs and may even be dangerous. “Most adult bars have the equivalent of an adult multivitamin inside,” observed Michael Sheron at Good Natured Products, maker of KidSport Nutrition Bars. “You wouldn’t give your kid an adult multivitamin, yet a lot of parents don’t think twice about grabbing a bar and giving it to their kids.”
For example, a ZonePerfect bar contains 80% of the daily chromium needed by adults and “that’s 320% for a 7-10 year old.” All ZonePerfect bars also have 210% of the adult levels of vitamin E, which is about 600% for 7- 10 year olds. For kids under 7, it’s even higher,” Sheron added. Some bars contain may contain herbal stimulants. “Consumers should read labels carefully before using bars or offering them to children,” cautioned Consumerlab.com.
